Reflections on Love in Action

Jesus, this morning I am reminded of Your new command to love one another as You have loved us (John 13:34, ESV). Love is not merely an emotion or an idea—it is action. You did not just tell us You loved us; You showed it through Your life, Your sacrifice, and Your resurrection. As I meditate on this truth, I recognize the call to love my wife and lead my family as You love and lead the Church (Ephesians 5:25-28, NIV). Yet, I often feel that I fall short, spinning my wheels in the pursuit of deeds that only love can accomplish.

You taught us that the greatest commandment is to love the Lord our God with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind and to love our neighbor as ourselves (Matthew 22:37-39, ESV). This is not a passive call but an invitation into a life marked by love in motion. Love does not sit still; it moves, gives, sacrifices, and embraces. Bob Goff writes, "Love is never stationary. In the end, love doesn’t just keep thinking about it or keep planning for it. Simply put: love does" (Love Does, p. ix). Lord, help me not just to know love or admire it but to live it.

There are moments when I am caught up in my own insufficiencies, questioning whether I am doing enough. But love is not measured by accomplishments; it is known in selfless giving. "Love is sacrifice in motion" (Love Does, p. 81), which is the love You demonstrated on the cross. The more I try to love out of my own strength, the more I realize my need for You.

A Prayer for Love in Motion

Lord, today, I pray for more of You and less of me—more love and less of everything else. Let love do what love does in my heart, my marriage, my family, and my community. For those who have never experienced Your love, I pray that they may come to know You. For those who have drifted away, I ask that You draw them back to Your grace. Your mercy is infinite, Lord; all power and glory belong to You alone.

Thank You, Father, for the gift of salvation, for hope that is alive, and for love that is not stagnant but always moving, always doing, always giving.

Amen.
